Licensure expectations
All members are expected to report in privacy and confidence to Admin of any ethical violations/reports from their ethical board during the time of their active membership. When an ethical violation/report is brought to our attention, Admin will support and mentor members in accordance with respective ethical guidelines and make decisions about membership status accordingly. All members are expected to maintain licensure in good standing.
Confidentiality
When searching for a referral within the group or asking for advice, there should be no client identifying information in the message. Describing a client’s presenting problem, diagnosis, or treatment approach, even if the client’s name is not given, is a violation of confidentiality. No names, family details, or anything that might give clues about the client.
It’s acceptable to discuss issues. A simple statement about the problem (anxiety; oppositional behavior) is sufficient. For example, you can ask, “Does anyone have any resources on sensory processing disorder in children 3-5 years of age?” or “Does anyone have resources for adults struggling with porn addiction?” Ensure that you phrase your post in a manner that does not describe an actual client.
When seeking a referral, focus on the counselor’s skills, not the client’s issues. For example, “I’m looking for a counselor who helps adolescents dealing with depression.” or: “I’m looking for an Arabic speaking therapist that specializes in eating disorders in adult women.” Please remember to protect the confidential information of current AND prospective clients during request and case consults.
Group Participation
If you feel the need to seek further, in-depth consultation on a particular case, please request to reach out to a MAPS therapist individually and be judicious with client details. For example: “I’d like to request a consultation with a therapist that specializes in dissociation and trauma.”
Refrain from posting requests for monetary, material donations or signing of petitions for various purposes unless directly related to mental health board laws.
All therapists in MAPS identify as Muslim; however, there is a rich diversity within this homogenous group. In order to respect all denominations and/or sects, please refrain from posting any specific religious recommendations or supplications.
